Guard Dogs

Dogs are awesome! They come in all different shapes and sizes. You can get everything from a Chihuahua to a Saint Bernard. Dogs are used for hunting, companionship, service to the disabled, law enforcement and property protection among other things. Guard dogs are what I want to focus on in this article.

If you are a dog owner you have seen your gentle Cocker Spaniel or friendly Golden Retriever or similar dog erupt into barking when they feel that someone has intruded upon their space. Perhaps they believe someone is threatening their owner. This is certainly true of the larger dog breeds such as German Shepherds.

I remember hearing a relative tell a story about how one day she was in her yard with her German Shepherd when a salesman drove up and jumped out of his car. She advised him not to get too close to the dog and allow her time to put him back in his fence. He stated that he was comfortable around dogs and continued to approach. He reached his hand toward her with a brochure. Well the German Shepherd, whose name was Champ, was not having it. He started to growl and make a step toward the salesman. Fortunately, my relative kept control of Champ and the salesman was not harmed. Champ was a relatively calm dog but he was being protective toward his owner against an unknown person.

I have also witnessed firsthand what an advantage it is to have dogs around to help safe guard your property. We utilize dogs to protect our business office. We have a German Shepherd and a Labrador Retriever. They will certainly alert you when an unfamiliar vehicle or person is in the area. We have had these two for many years but they are still healthy animals. We are careful not to feed them table food and keep them at a healthy weight. That sometimes is a challenge as retrievers certainly have healthy appetites. We also stick to the same brand of dog food instead of switching constantly. We have consistently fed them Purina Dog Chow. They like it and have done well on it.

Dogs are great to have around as companions. They are loyal, smart and fun. Dogs can be especially useful as guard dogs whether at home or a business. As humans it is our responsibility to treat them kindly and make sure they are as healthy as they can be. If we do that, they will give us many years of service and love.
